On a regular basis I meet with aspiring entrepreneurs and it never ceases to amaze me how little patience they have or how they are not thinking long term. The probability of you becoming an overnight success is extremely small, but with the right approach and some patience you can be one of the few that succeeds.
If you would have asked me 8 years ago if I believed I would be be able to wake up everyday to do something I love, I may have not believed you. At the time I was working as a hi-lo driver and was stuck in a company culture that wasn’t for me. I was on cruise control, but hey it paid the bills. One day I finally decided I wanted to control my destiny. I wanted to help people create beautiful content for their business.
So I set off into my journey aspiring to do all these great things, but I wasn’t an overnight success. I actually failed for the first 4 years of being in business and had to borrow money to live, racked up some debit on credit cards and lived as minimalistically as I possible could.
Until one day my hard work started to align and I found myself staring down a major video project that helped jumpstart my business.
Here are 4 ideas that will help you succeed in your own adventure.
1. Play the long term game. Look to where you want to be in 10 years then work backwards 5 years, 3 years, 1 year, 6 months, 1 month and 1 week to finalize a plan on how to get to your 10 year goal. Start right now and set your future self up for success.
2. Give, Give Give. Provide value to people, thought leadership and ideas without ever asking for anything in return. The more you can help someone the more they will be invested in your success.
3. Read and Read some more. Everyday I read for 30 minutes. I read books on entrepreneurs, sales, culture, business, marketing and even on investing. I believe this is the single most important thing you can do everyday and it only keeps expanding your knowledge base.
4. You are the sum of the people you surround yourself with. Your inner circle will help push you further than you could have imagined and guide you when stumble.
My point is- you’re going to fail if you’re so focused on being an overnight success. You are the best investment you can make in your lifetime and the decisions you make today will affect you throughout your life
The road is long and the climb is steep, but you will get there!
